SUMMÀRY:
The author investigates household solid fuel use as a risk factor for hospitalization during pregnancy in selected regions of Ukraine. The group of investigation includes 4220 women partici-pants of “Family and Children of Ukraine” (FCOU) program, Ukrainian component of European Longitudinal Study of Pregnancy and Childhood (ELSAC) from three cities of Ukraine: Kyiv, Dniprodzerzhynsk and Mariupol. The selection was limited to participants with singleton pregnancy and available information on type of a heating system and a fuel used in their homes.
The analysis of cases of hospitalization among pregnant indicates higher percentage among solid fuel users in comparison to other fuel type users (52.5% and 44.3%, p=0.074). The number of repeated hospitalization is also higher through solid fuel users (28.7% and 15.9% p=0.001). The most frequent pregnancy complications registered among the study participants are anemia (51,0%), early vaginal bleeding in the first trimester of pregnancy (21,2%), threat of premature labor (18,4%), genital infections (16,9%), hypertension (13,5%), suspicion on fetal retardation (9,8%) and eclampcia (8,8%).
Using large fundamental information on this issue collected during the years of FCOU pro-gram it is planned to continue risks assessment for major reasons of hospitalization in pregnancy, including an association with household solid fuel use in combination with other factors impact on health status of pregnant women.
