Objective. The aim of the work was to study and analyze the trends in the development of cardiovascular diseases (CVD) in Ukraine and regions and to search for connections with the state of atmospheric pollution.
Materials and methods. Medical and statistical analysis of primary incidence rates of CVD for the period 1990-2017 and total annual emissions into the atmosphere from stationary sources of pollution. The analysis was carried out using absolute, intensive (levels per 100,000 population) and extensive values; the following were used: minimum, maximum territorial value, median, amplitude of the series of regional distribution of indicators, first and third quartiles, 95% probability interval, Kruskal-Wallis rank univariate analysis, comparison with the control group using Dunn's criterion, methods of correlation and regression analysis.
Results. Over the past decade, cardiovascular diseases have ranked first in terms of the number of registered cases, the number of requests for medical care and the cause of death of the population of Ukraine. The dynamics of the number of newly detected diseases of the circulatory system in Ukraine remains at a relatively high level after a rapid increase from the 1990s to 2010. Since 2013, a trend has been recorded towards a decrease in the number of such cases per 100,000 population. The general indicators of air pollution from stationary sources in Ukraine generally reflect a favorable downward trend during the recent years. A comparison of the dynamics of morbidity and changes in air pollution indicators in Ukraine and by region reveals a tendency towards unidirectional changes with a time difference of several years (3-5 years). Within the framework of this study, it was not possible to establish reliable relationships between the All-Ukrainian and regional indicators of cardiovascular disease incidence and air pollution indexes in the regions.
Conclusions. The main problems of methodological difficulties in organizing an epidemiological study of the impact of atmospheric pollution on the development of cardiovascular diseases in Ukraine are formulated, which is the basis for further research.
