IRYNA IVANIVNA DATSENKO – PROFESSOR, SCIENTIST-HYGIENIST, EDUCATOR, PUBLIC FIGURE: FOR THE COMMEMORATION OF HER 100TH BIRTHDAY (1925-2006)

SUMMÀRY:
Objective. To trace the life and creative path, highlight the scientific, pedagogical, and public activities of Professor I.I. Datsenko.
Materials and methods. Scientific works of Prof. Iryna Datsenko, articles about her life path. Methods – discovery, analytical, descriptive.
Results. Iryna Ivanivna Datsenko (1925-2006) is a well-known Ukrainian scientist-hygienist, a representative of the Lviv scientific hygienic school, a talented teacher, and an active participant in public life. In 1951, she graduated with honors from the Lviv State Medical Institute, worked as a therapist in Sokal district hospital of Lviv region, did postgraduate studies (1953-1955), and in 1955, she defended her candidate's thesis on the topic "Carbon monoxide pollution of the air of car cabins and streets of Lviv and its impact on the body of motor transport workers", was an assistant, and since 1960, associate professor of the Department of General Hygiene. In 1967, she defended her thesis for the degree of Doctor of Medical Sciences "Carbon monoxide in the environment and the possibility of chronic intoxication". In 1970, she received the academic title of professor, was elected to the position of head of the Department of General Hygiene and Ecology, which she headed until 1999, and continued to work as a professor of the same department. Since 1996, she was the member of the New York Academy of Sciences, since 2002, the academician of the Academy of Sciences of the Higher School of Ukraine. Scientific areas: hygienic assessment of the actual state of the atmospheric air environment of populated areas, housing, chronic carbon monoxide intoxication, real chemical load on humans, study of the influence of a complex of factors in passenger bus transportation, toxicological and hygienic assessment of pesticides, the influence of chemical products of combustion of synthetic polymer materials on the body and mental performance of a person and the air environment of sports halls on the functional state of the body of students, issues of occupational hygiene and health of workers of a number of industrial enterprises, scientific substantiation of regulations for medicines and printing photopolymer forms in water bodies, development of methods for gas chromatographic analysis of air pollutants using zeolites as solid sorbents, development of preventive measures aimed at preserving public health.
Prof. I.I. Datsenko was a talented teacher of high qualification, author and co-author of a number of textbooks and manuals for students, in particular the textbooks "Fundamentals of General and Tropical Hygiene" (1995), "Preventive Medicine. General Hygiene with Fundamentals of Ecology" (1999, 2004), bibliographical essays of Ukrainian scientists and physicians.
Prof. I.I. Datsenko was a Fellow of Shevchenko Scientific Society, honorary member of the Ukrainian Medical Society, head of the Medical Commission of the National School of Hygiene, was also a member of the editorial board of the collection of scientific works "Hygiene of populated places", editor-in-chief of the "Medical Collection" of the National School of Hygiene, member of the Board of the Ukrainian Scientific Society of Hygienists, the Board of the Lviv Society of Hygienists, the Council of the Institute of Regional Ecological Problems.
Prof. I.I. Datsenko prepared 18 candidates of sciences, authored and co-authored about 400 scientific works, more than 30 monographs, textbooks, manuals, dictionaries. She was awarded the Order of the Badge of Honor, the Medal "Veteran of Labor", the Commemorative Medal of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine "Ten Years of Independence of Ukraine", the Certificate of Honor of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine, awarded the Yaroslav the Wise Award, the honorary title "Excellent Health Worker" and "Honored Education Worker", scholarships of the Ministry of Science and Education of Ukraine.
A memorial office of Professor Iryna Ivanivna Datsenko has been opened at the Danylo Halytsky Lviv National Medical University.
Conclusion. The scientific and educational creative work of Prof. I.I. Datsenko remains in the interests of students, will serve future generations of scientists, preventive and clinical physicians, medical students.
